Fire in Gikomba market again!!!
It is yet another sad day for some Gikomba traders as a raging fire is gutting down their wares.
Just three weeks ago close to 200 merchants here lost their items in a fire which came few days after the Nairobi Metropolitan Services said it would evict them.
Today the fire is said to be consuming the timber and has gone out of control even as the city experiences heavy downpour that has caused floods.
A trader Myner Stephen Minor shared the shocking details on social media saying;
“It’s time now God intervenes #gikombafireagain. Its beyond our control n it pains to see properties burning down just like that. We have nothing to smile about n may the person involved with this may never find peace”.
Some netizens have asked former governor Mike Sonko to expose purported cartels behind these fires in Gikomba.
Politicians like William Kabogo have raised questions regarding the Gikomba incidences, many believing are arsons.
Fire in Gikomba has apparently become a kind of festive, raising questions if there are people behind it to claim the prime land, whether these are just normal accidents or business rivalry.
While in some cases some traders ignite fire to claim handsome pay from their insurers, there is still likelihood of plot to frustrate the traders to leave the space for some developers.
The last fire on November 8 morning affected the mitumba sellers.
According to traders, there has been 16 fires since 2015. Now this one become the 17th one.
Government has been planning to kick out some traders to allow the expansion of Pumwani Majengo Health Centre and a road.
Some traders sued the city county government seeking compensation of Sh20 billion for the damages caused by fire in the last six years.
