Big blow to Kenyans as Maize flour price is named
The prices of maize flour are expected to shoot in the country during the festival season as the country showers in the new year. Kenyans will have to dig deep into their pockets to put ugali on the table.
Speaking to local media, Mr Kipngetich Mutai, who chairs the Grain Belt Millers Association (GBMA) said they have caved into market pressure and the price of a 90kg bag will increase by Sh500 to a new price of Sh2,800 amid a biting shortage.
“Consumers should be prepared to pay more for flour as the cost of maize keeps on rising. The current price of Sh2,800 per 90kg bag means a 2kg packet will go for more than Sh120 in the next two months,” Mutai said.
The sharp rise in prices has been attributed to an invasion by cartels in the chain of supply after the sector was liberalized. The cartels have also been accused of hoarding maize and creating artificial shortages.
