COVID-19 Vaccine taskforce chairman speaks on the widespread flu

The National Covid-19 Vaccine Taskforce Chairman Willis Akhwale speaks at a past function.

National Covid-19 Vaccine Taskforce Chairman Dr Willis Akhwale has weighed in on the flu that Kenyans have been talking about on social media platforms. Speaking on Wednesday on the Jeff Koinange Live news program on Citizen Television, Akhwale said that investigations had been launched to determine the nature of the flu.

“There is need for an investigation to determine the nature of the flu. We don’t yet know whether it is influenza alone or it is influenza coupled with Covid-19. It is important that Kenyans know that a flu attacks the upper part of the respiratory tract while Covid-19 attacks the lungs, ” the Chairman of the National Covid-19 Vaccine Taskforce said on the JKL program aired on the Royal Media Services-owned Citizen Television.

Talk of a flu roiled social media platforms on Wednesday. A section of Kenyans said that they had contracted a flu that left them with a cough. This comes amid a raging Covid-19 pandemic with the new variant Omicron reported in the country on Wednesday.

Health officials have called on Kenyans to take the Covid-19 shot to blunt the spread of the respiratory disease. CS Mutahi Kagwe warned that Kenyans who will not have been vaccinated will not receive essential government services. This even as a court voided the order, saying vaccination should be mandatory.
