Painful reality for family of Okwach, who is still trapped inside burried mine

As Kenyans wait for Christmas holidays affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, a family in Abimbo village, Siaya County, remains hopeless on the fate of their kin.

Apart from last year when they celebrated the Christmas holiday with him, 24-year-old Tom Okwach will not be around when his family members will be celebrating their Christmas holiday this time round.

Martin Sikuku, Tom Okwach’s father noted that when Tom reached them on phone few days prior to the tragedy, Tom vowed to send Kshs12000 for his mother for shopping.

They were, later, surprised when one miner reached them on phone on the horrific day and informed them on the shocking news that Tom was one of the eight miners buried alive in the rubble while mining.

21 days after the goldmine caved in Abimbo and buried them, Okwach’s mother, Joyce Ocholla, has been in agony.

Other six other goldminers were saved alive, the tragic news of her son has been too heavy to bear.

An image of Okwach, a boda boda operator who later ventured into mining to get additional cash, loved his parents and friends.

Siaya County Chief Officer charged with Governance Joseph Omondi, who toured the collapsed goldmine, noted that the rescue operations are still ongoing.
